Thank you to our reader from the CCAC for updating us here at MyRehirement regarding the error made from the article which we referenced regarding the program that they are offering for individuals 50+.

We just wanted to make this important correction regarding our post from July 16th about a CCAC Program in Pittsburgh. The actual program is for a Medical Office Manager, rather an assisant.

Manager or Assisant…ummmmmm, I’ll take the manager position please.

Good Luck to all those enrolling, let us know how it works out.

A quick post from the Wall Street Journal’s blog points out two very different retirement scenarios. In the first, employees are forced to retire earlier than they expected or desired. In the second, employees who have to work longer than they have envisioned years ago while still planning their retirement.

One of the most interesting points in this post is the suggestion that postponing retirement actually helps the economy (and could well fuel a stronger recovery) by delaying many boomers from a fixed income, allowing them to continue spending. This extended period of consumption could help offset a slower recovery in the labor market due to the fact that people like you are working longer.

It’s an interesting perspective, but surely cold comfort to those of you who have to delay your dreams because of the mismanagement of your money.

There have been a lot of news stories of late that have focused on how the shabby state of the economy has forced many seasoned employees to delay retirement or not to retire at all. While this is no doubt newsworthy, it does overshadow another story - many seasoned workers are putting off retirement, often indefinitely, not because of financial circumstances, but simply because they love what they do and they have the vitality to do it.

So why aren’t we hearing more about those of you who choose to keep working, whether it’s continuous or a new post-retirement work experience? Or those who have found a fulfilling calling in volunteering their time? The media are slow to challenge the concept of retirement and the realization that it’s changing. Enter the blogosphere.

It’s through people like you, people who have chosen to work well beyond their “retirement years”, and your stories that will ultimately challenge the perception of retirement as an end. We are looking for some inspiring stories from readers who have either continued to work or who have embarked on a new post-career path. Send us your story at info@myrehirement.com.

Well, there I was the other day sitting in my favorite chair when my wife turns on The Oprah Show. I roll my eyes and begin to leave the room, when all of a sudden I hear the subject being cover on the days episode “Ageless Living: The Blue Zones”. Before I know it, I am leaning back in my chair and giving into the overpowering strength of Oprah.

There were people on this show from various countries in their late 90’s and even 100+ that were in better shape than I am. These people continue to work, be physically active and throughly enjoy life. People like this inspire me to want more out of my own life, to continue on my pursuit of happiness and make necessary changes to obtain these goals.

This maybe the first and last time I may say this, “I watch Oprah and I don’t care who knows it!”

I highly suggest checking out that episode.

Over the next decade, the onus will be on employers to adopt a more flexible phased retirement strategy much like they have with telecommuting, compressed work weeks, and other flexible work arrangements.
